Monday night saw us with 8 runners on the card , 7 graded and also a representative in the maiden open competition. The best we could manage from the graded runners was a couple of second places however Salacres Fever landed the maiden open in all the way style at odds of 6/1. He was our first open race runner since our 4 timer at Henlow so that makes it 5 from 5 on the open front , a very pleasing stat. Fever has been in the kennel for a while now but his career in the UK has been very stop start with little problems. It was good to get a win on his card though at last.
I was speaking to local bookmaker Eric of MS Racing before racing last night. He couldn't believe the amount of comments that he's been hearing of late claiming that bookmakers these days will only lay a decent bet if they can lay off at bigger odds on 'The Machine'. Eric (pictured below) said , "It's a fallacy to suggest that all bookmakers are interested in these days is laying off on Betfair. I class myself as a proper old school bookmaker , i'll lay what you like when you like and you'll never catch me diving for cover behind my board. In fact I wouldn't know how to use a computer never mind lay a bet off. Head to Notts you'll all get on , form an orderly queue".
