Saturday we managed to score a double courtesy of Deviance and Salacresprincess. Deviance is a young dog who has ability but has been slow to come to hand. Finding himself in A5 on Saturday night as a late reserve he handled the situation well and ran out a good early pace always led winner. Princess is not the easiest bitch to win with but Saturdays victory was her second in her last 4 starts , finding some form approaching her 5th birthday next month.
Monday night is usually a mixed graded and open card. With the Select Stakes meeting taking place on Tuesday evening though it was a full card of graded races. The night got off to the best possible start as Salacres Tiger ran a game race from behind to win his A3 in a photo finish. Express Sienna , a brilliantly bred bitch by Droopys Scolari x Express Tune was our next winner. Sienna looked to have her best chance of victory to date on her third start for us here at Notts and after taking an early lead she set sail for home. A couple of runners briefly challenged heading into the fourth bend but once straightening up Sienna kept on gamely and scored by a length. We had to wait until the last race of the night to complete the hat-trick. Salacres George took advantage of a messy race when landing his A2 race. It was a very slow time for the grade however and he shouldn't be too harshly penalised next time out.
So onto the aforementioned Select Stakes meeting on Tuesday evening. This is always a big meeting on the Notts calendar , with the Sky Sports cameras in attendance and some of the countrys leading runners on show , it's a night when everybody would love to have a winner. We were to be represented on the night by two runners. Salacres Ruffian lined up in the final of his 480m maiden trophy. This race turned into a 4 runner affair but to be honest Ruffian was always going to be running for run money. He's not impressed me a great deal since arriving i've got to admit. Hopefully he can find some form but he must improve on his running so far. Our other runner on the night was Salacres Francie. After arriving from Ireland with some more than decent form in the book we couldn't believe our luck when he was priced up at as big as 12/1 for his debut race in a maiden down at Hove. We went for a bit of a touch and found ourselves finishing a very unlucky second to an outsider in the race. To be honest we couldn't understand how this dog had beat us , his name is What Fun Jamie however and he has since gone onto win a further 3 times including a 2802 Towcester and a 2849 Swindon. Things look a little clearer than they did on the night , but no easier to take. It was to be money only lent though , we all had massive faith in Francie that he could and would be reproducing his best Irish form and this 480m maiden on Select Stakes night was pencilled in. After running in the Grand Prix up at Sunderland (unlucky not to qualify) we gave him a sprint trial at Notts to keep him ticking over. Francies race looked winnable , we decided to have another tilt at the ring and this time there were no dangers. Smashing out of the lids and taking a good early lead Francie pulled further and further clear the further they went. No dangers ! Francies team of owners are all delighted and hopefully this will act as a springboard for future success.
A couple of other great performances to note on the night , Millwards Teddy ran a terrific race to claim the Select Stayers whilst Swift Hoffman backed up his amazing trials at Notts just lately by putting a top quality field to the sword in the Select Stakes. A pleasure to watch this dog in full stride.
