Hardwork & Dedication Pays Off As Ussain Finally Wins

PictureUssain - Not Just A Highjump Specialist
Plenty has been happening since the last update.  Last Friday evening Salacres Pops took advantage of a troublesome race to skip away around the outside and win his A4 by 9 1/2 lengths.  It was an impressive performance to the eye but the winning time of 3108 tells you he'll need to improve against stiffer opposition.  Salacres Koeman was facing A1 company for the first time in his fledgling career and it wasn't ideal that he took a first bend tumble.  Thankfully he was fine and suffered no physical issues.

Three winners last Saturday night with Peter , River and Awayday Rock all scoring in good style.  Peter came through with his customary late burst to win his A4 whilst River put his early pace to good use to win for the first time in A7.  River finds Notts 500m at the upper end of his stamina limit , so although he got away with missing his break on this occasion , he'd not be one that would be coming from behind when stepped up in class.  Salacres Moore was an unlucky loser in her A3 and as you'll read later in the blog she would soon atone for that defeat.  Awayday Rock was off the card for most of the latter part of 2016 but has now won three times in 2017 , a testament to the work the team at the kennels have put in to get him back on track.

Just the four runners on Monday and though we didn't have any winners , Costa did run on well to qualify in second place for the Tagg Memorial Trophy Final.  He looks up against it in what is a tough final on Monday evening , but he's fit and well and will be giving it everything he's got.

Onto Tuesdays BAGS meeting and we landed a very welcome four timer.  Romeo Blitz took some time to settle into life at Nottingham but he won again in A4 company and has now won ten times for us.  He's a dog that always seems to go off at big enough prices but you can never safely rule him out.  Salacres Foxy won well in A6 whilst Destiny was a very impressive winner of her A4.  I like all the dogs and bitches from the Zero Ten x Salacres Gem litter and I think given a little time they will all be competing in higher class than they currently find themselves.  Destiny trapped out well on Tuesday and put these rivals to the sword as she scored by 5 1/2 lengths in 3057 (+20).  If you'd asked me prior to Dougies A2 i'd have told you even money looked a very short price for a dog not without his issues.  We're a little bit between a rock and a hard place with Dougie at present.  Sprint opposition are proving a little quick in the early pace department whilst he's not quite coming home as strong as we'd like against 500m opponents.  That said he went well clear here and though coming back to them late on he won by an ever diminishing head.  The winning time of 3102 calculated tells you he'll need to get a bit stronger though to hold off A2 runners on a regular basis.

We headed to Sheffield on Tuesday evening to give David a 480m prep race ahead of a tilt at the Three Steps To Victory and were to be treble handed in the British Bred Puppy race.  David finished fifth in his race , the look around will serve him well ahead of a tough Three Steps heat on Tuesday.  Olympic , Incredible Flyer and Koeman all lined up in the aforementioned puppy race with Olympic (2nd) , Koeman (3rd) and Flyer (4th).  They were all beaten by Carl Perry's Geelo Monty.  He looks a pup with a very bright future and will take some beating in the British Bred Puppy competition which gets underway this Tuesday at Sheffield.  It's worth noting though that Monty does have a 3 month age advantage on our pups , a not insignificant stat at this age and i'll be disappointed if our pups haven't also taken a huge step forward on their current form come July and August of this year.  I'd like to wish all the puppys and their connections good luck for the competition this week.  Competitions like this , and the chance of winning decent prizemoney , are the culmination of almost 2 years hard work.  It was disappointing that Sheffield didn't receive more entries for the competition but i'm glad that they got the event on.  Those of us who did enter our pups didn't deserve to be punished for the lack of entries from others.  I would urge anybody breeding British to support the British Bred events whenever possible.

Onto this weekend and it really was a case of seconditus to start Friday as we filled that position in each of the first 3 races.  Awayday Rock , River and Aneto all found one too good in their resepective races.  We had to wait until the final race of the evening to get ourselves on the winners podium but it was a performance well worth waiting for.  I am finding myself liking Salacres Moore with each passing performance.  Moore is a very clever bitch , will pass on the inside or outside and spots a gap well.  She appears at this stage that she stays quite well so you never know how she could turn out.

We had two winners on Saturday night and two seconds from just eight runners.  Salacresbenidorm won his A4 in good style and was followed home by Romeo Blitz to give a Salacres forecast of £10.05.  Later on the card we seen something we'd never see.  Salacres Ussain is one of our Gem pups but spent the early part of his career with our friends in Ireland the Comerford family.  Ussain has pace , there is no doubt about that , the trouble is he doesn't like to use it.  The nearest Ussain has come to a win was when landing the local village pub's high jump competition.  Big mention has to go to Gaynor who has put countless hours into ensuring that Ussain would somehow finally win a race.  Last night albeit in A6 company Ussain finally won at the 28th attempt.  Salacres ran well in A2 company in the final race of the night , he was beaten just a length and put up a personal best time of 3031 (+30).

Thanks for reading and also thanks for all the support i've received recently from people i've spoke to around the tracks.  It means alot to know that I have the backing of most genuine greyhound folk around the country.

Warrior Hat-Trick As Silvia Wins Over Six

PicturePleasing comeback run in A1 from David
Grey Warrior has been in terrific form just lately and that continued on Friday as he completed a hat-trick of wins in A3 grade.  In fact this was his fourth win in just his last seven starts.  Warrior has a great attitude to his racing and is a pleasure to train.  We had one other winner on Friday evening though we had to wait until late into the meeting for it to arrive.  Salacres Pops is a young pup that we bought in as a sapling.  He's a blue Droopys Scolari dog out of a bitch called Bit View Emma and being just an August 2015 whelp and with this being just his third career start , he should have a bit of improvement to come yet.  Pops had shown a bit of pace in his trials but in all honesty hadn't run great in his first couple of races at A3 grade.  A drop in grade to A4 combined with being able to get on the bunny early worked the oracle though and Pops ran out a game winner.

Saturday evening saw Salacres Silvia winning at S3 level over 680m.  It's good to see a S3 on the card as there are plenty of dogs , such as Silvia , who obviously appreciate a test of stamina but would find S2 level too difficult.  This was far from being a terrific race but it was nice all the same to see Silvia land the spoils and win for the second time in her last four races.  David was back on the card after a short break and it was pleasing to see him run well when finishing a decent second in A1.  We'll hopefully be targeting the Three Steps To Victory with David at Sheffield.  He's a strong running sort and that is a competition which could well suit him.

It was close but no cigar on Monday and Tuesday.  Awayday Rock (Monday) , Kearni , Biaritz and Diablo (Tuesday) all finished second in their respective races.  Tuesday evening saw the team represented at both Towcester and Sheffield.  Peter headed to Towcester with Salacres Empire for the sprint open , she ran well enough but was well beaten in all fairness and similar comments apply for Salacres Keitel who Mark had taken for the sprint at Sheffield.  Mystery and Pops trialled over the sprint trip at Towcester and it was pleasing to see Mystery chase hard all the way to the pick up after his little misdemeanour at Notts.  Koeman and Olympic both trialled at Sheffield over 500m and they both went well.  There is a British Bred Puppy competition coming up at Sheffield and we will be targeting both of these dogs at that as well as one or two others.  The sport needs to see everybody supporting these British Bred events whenever and wherever possible.  It's always good to get out and about to different tracks.  I spoke to a few trainers at Towcester and it's great to receive so much support with regards my recent appointment at the GBGB.

Thanks as always for reading and here's to a good year ahead in the sport.

A Statement Regards Recent Speculation

When I applied for the position of practitioner director representing trainers at the GBGB I expected a tough time from some.  I'm not a shrinking violet and i'm nobodys puppet.  Let's make that clear.  When I applied for the position , I applied because I wanted to apply , not because anybody else wanted me to apply.  We shall make that clear as well.  Since taking the position myself and my staff have come in for every bit of name calling that you can imagine from the vocal minority.  We'll start with the anti racing lot.  I have no time for these people.  Let's make this clear so everybody can fully understand , I have no time for antis whose sole aim in life is to attempt to shut down the sport which has been my life from the day I was born.  I have no interest in acknowledging these people and I have no interest in talking to them.  I have no interest in the lies which they spout about myself , my dogs and about the sport which I love.  I will say this for one last time , the vast majority of my dogs which have ended their careers have been rehomed.  That is gone to live with new families , gone to enjoy their retirement.  That is the final word I will say on this subject.

I have also come under attack from Ricky Holloway who i'm led to believe has taken it upon himself to post about my moral standards on a certain website.  He has my number yet chooses to make posts on a website that is so close to being anti racing that it is in danger of falling over the edge.  A website inhabited by numerous unstable individuals who mainly all have their own personal axes to grind.  This particular website has one agenda and one agenda only.  To cause as much harm to greyhound racing as it possibly can.  The inhabitants and staff of this particular website insult me , insult my staff , attack my sport , attack my morals , yet seem astounded that i'm not prepared to speak to them ? You tell me maybe I should invite them round for tea.  I was a supporter of Ricky Holloway at the beginning of his trainers representative tenure.  That was until Ricky decided to go and blow it all before he'd even started by shooting his mouth off.  He spent an eternity trying to gain access to the platform upon which he could make a difference and then blew it all before he'd even got started.  The rest of Rickys tenure was a complete and utter waste of time.  I decided I had to stand up and try and do something.  I was not prepared to stand back and let others make decisions on my behalf.  As a trainer I wanted a trainer on board to have an input into the decisions that are directly affecting my life in the sport.  Will I make a difference ?  I certainly hope so.  If I don't , I can assure each and every one of you it will not be for lack of effort.

Thanks for taking time to read this short statement.  It was something I felt I had to write to keep the people that matter to me upto date.  That's you , the vast majority of good honest greyhound racing people , not the antis , not the attention seeking crowd on certain websites.

Keep your heads up , stay positive.  This is a great sport , full of great people.  Together we will make a difference.

Kennel In Fine Form & Towcester One - Two Icing On Cake

Picture"When I Grow Up I'm Going To Win An Open At Towcester" Salacres Koeman 2015
The kennel has hit a really rich vein of form recently and that continued over the weekend.  Friday we landed a treble as Salacres Olympic , Grey Warrior and Salacreshandsome all obliged.  Olympic ran a real game race showing great courage and ability to win at A3 level for the first time.  Olly as we call him is improving at a rapid rate and it shouldn't be too long before he's winning again.  Grey Warrior followed up his A3 win from last week with another victory at that level.  His winning time of 3136 calc was very moderate for the grade though so hopefully he's given another chance at this level.  Things really clicked into place for handsome last time out and despite a double upgrade to A5 he managed to complete a quickfire double.  After a very slow start to his career he's now coming forward well.

Saturday evening we landed a double as Salacres Moore and Hill both obliged.  Moore who is a 3/4 sister to Walshes Hill has been showing terrific pace in her races but inexperience has cost her so far.  Despite not gaining the clearest of runs on Saturday however she still managed to come through with a strong late run to win her A4 by 3 lengths in 3094 calculated.  Moore is an improving type who I like alot.  Hill who is actually a half brother of Moore's made it a family double when winning the top grade sprint event on the night at a huge 6/1.  After trapping well and taking an early lead the result never really looked in doubt as he powered to victory in 1826.  Salacres Empire finished third in Hills race and she lost nothing in defeat and remains one to keep on side.

Monday couldn't have got off to a better start as we landed the first two races of the evening as Salacres Beyonce always led in her A4 and Farran Sexton made it a quickfire double for the kennel as he came through late on to win his A2.  I've made no secret of the fact that Salacres Mystery is a young pup I rate highly.  He's from the Zero Ten x Salacres Gem litter and this is a pup with huge pace.  He's not proving straight forward at the moment though and after stopping for a look around at the fourth bend in his 500m maiden open we'll have to get to work to make sure this doesn't become a habit.  Rest assured though he's feeling no ill effects from his exertions , he came bouncing out of his kennel on Tuesday morning and had obviously enjoyed his evening out , even if he did leave us scratching our heads !  Salacres Dougie looked to have a solid chance for us in the maiden sprint final and despite not trapping too badly , in all honesty he was tapped for a bit of pace to the first bend and after running far too wide around the turn he could never get into genuine contention.  He did run on well but it was far too little and far too late.  He's fit and well though and we will look at other options for him over the coming weeks.

Another very welcome treble on Tuesday mornings BAGS card.  McManus got the ball rolling when making pretty much all in A4.  I'm hearing a couple of shrewd judges snapped up big prices about McManus , well done to them and I hope you put my score on.  Comerford is a young September 15 pup from the Zero Ten x Incredible Lulu litter.  He's  been a bit green in his running since arriving from Ireland but this run was a big step forward as he ran a very gutsy race after no end of trouble to win in A6.  Hopefully this acts as a stepping stone and he can no improve through a few grades.  When the dogs are running as well as they are at present , you simply can't rule anything out with any confidence.  Salacres Diablo is a prime example of this.  He didn't really look at have a great chance and his sp of 9/2 shows he was far from a certainty.  After trapping well he was in front by the first and ran away to win by 3 1/2 lengths in 3070 calculated.  This was Diablos 56th race for us here at Notts and this was a personal best run , like I say , when they're in this kind of form you just can't rule anything out.

A great weekend and another good day but it wasn't to end here.  We headed to Towcester on Tuesday evening with Salacres Koeman and sibling Olympic both running in the same puppy open over 500m and with Salacres Keitel running in the sprint open.  Things couldn't have gone much better in the puppy open as Koeman completed a treble , leading early he really put this field to the sword when scorching away and winning by 5 1/2 lengths.  In his last 3 races , 2 x A3s and now this puppy open his combined winning distances have been 17 lengths.  This is a dog heading in the right direction (unlike Marks pants) and in six months time I really feel he'll be a real nice dog who won't be out of place in good class fields.  Make no mistake though Olympic ran an eyecatching race in second.  He didn't get the clearest of runs and unlike Koeman hadn't had the benefit of a trial.  He impressed me nearly every bit as much as Koeman did.  The Salacres forecast ?  £49.73 for anybody who had their crystal ball out.  Keitel couldn't get competitive in his sprint but hopefully the change of scenery will have done him good.

Thanks for reading and hope to see some of you down the track soon and wherever we maybe on the road.
