Great Weekend For Gems Offspring

PictureGood Weekend For Gems Offspring
The past couple of months haven't been great , some of the pups in particular have been a little under the weather.  Hopefully now though we're starting to see the back of this nasty bug and we can look forward to a good spring and summer period.  I know we've not been alone in being hit by the cough , it seems to have been doing the rounds of kennels from the south coast right to the far reaching north.  Fingers crossed for us all that we start seeing the back of it.  I know our own results have started picking up over the last week or two.  This weekend has been exceptional for us though.  We were to send out 18 runners at Nottingham across Friday and Saturday nights and ended up with 8 winners.  First up on Friday was Salacres Waltzer.  He's been off and on the card for a while now and has been a real struggle to get back.  Hopefully we're getting somewhere now and though i'd be pleasantly surprised if he were able to get back to his best , it's still good to see him back running and this A3 win can hopefully be a springboard to future success.  Our next winner was Incredible Ruby.  What can I say about this bitch that I haven't said time and time again ?  She's an exceptional bitch with a huge will to win.  Fridays victory took Rubys record to 27 wins from 109 career races.  Her win on Friday was also her 4th win in her last 5 starts.  Some record for a bitch who is nearing her 5th birthday.  Ruby looks as good today as the day she arrived at the kennel , huge testament to the team.  Finally our third winner on Friday was Salacres Koeman.  This stunning looking blue dog from our Zero Ten x Salacres Gem litter was winning in A3 grade at the third time of asking.  Koeman has alot of learning to do yet , at 34 kilo plus he's a big unit of a dog.  Let's see where he is in six months time.  Koeman is owned by myself , Mark and also Alan Witts.  Mark is currently laid up with man flu so unfortunately missed the win , however Alan was at the track and I know he was thrilled with the performance.

Onto Saturday and it was going to be a tough job to beat Fridays treble.  To come away with 5 winners though was better than any of us could have imagined.  First up Salacres Sophia was scoring for the second week in succession.  Sophia had won A3 the previous week at a big 8/1.  Given another chance in the grade she won well but it must be noted she did have the advantage of a vacant trap next to her in 5.  The treble wouldn't be out of the question if left in the same grade.  Grey Warrior was off for a couple of months over winter.  He won well towards the end of January and won again in A3 on Saturday.  Good to have him back.  We were represented in the D2 sprint by 2 pups whom I rate highly.  Empire and Mystery are brother and sister from our aforementioned Zero Ten x Salacres Gem litter.  I expect both of these pups to be competing in better races in a few months time.  They need experience though and these races are a starting point.  Empire had ran well when posting 18:00 calculated over the sprint trip in a trial recently and she franked that line of form when winning this race well at odds of 4/6.  Very short odds i'd say but she won so I guess the bookmakers got it right.  Mystery finished down the field but don't be taking this dog out of your notebooks just yet , he can run and it's a matter of time before he shows it.  Salacreshandsome made it 4 winners when taking his A7.  Even Stevie Wonder would have seen that this dog was a winner waiting to happen in this grade.  A slow starter , a little inexperienced when trying to pass , but game and genuine and was obviously going to win a fair way when he finally got a clear run.  That clear run came on Saturday night as Handsome ran away with his A7 by 6 1/4 lenghts.  Hopefully he's not too harshly treated for that run as he's sure to find life more difficult when moving up in grade.  To be fair to the racing office team at Notts they're generally very fair with pups and do try to give them a chance.  Our final winner on the night was Salacres Costa.  Down in grade to A3 he managed to overcome a poor draw out in six to win by just over a couple of lengths.  Costa , as with Sophia , is from our older Kiowa Sweet Trey x Salacres Gem litter so it really was a good week for the family.

PictureWell Deserved Retirement For Blueboy
Two winners on Friday evening and both meant an awful lot.  Salacres Destiny is a young bitch out of our Zero Ten x Salacres Gem litter.  Destiny was having her fifth race and ran on well after early crowding to score by 2 lengths.  Salacres Dougie winning meant alot to us all.  Dougie has not long returned to the track after an operation on quite a sensitive area , our main concern is that he is fit and well , but to get him back and winning a race is a bonus.

One winner on Saturday as Salacres proved far too good on the night for his A3 rivals when winning by 5 1/4 lengths.  We were also represented in this race by Salacres Koeman (Zero Ten x Salacres Gem).  I like Koeman alot but he is still quite green and learning his trade.  Once it all clicks into place he should become a nice dog.

Two winners and two second places on Monday evening.  Freddy and Diablo both ran game races in defeat but Salacres Olympic and David both went one better by landing the spoils.  Olympic is another dog from the Zero Ten x Salacres Gem litter.  Anybody with a good eye will have spotted the potential he had shown in his first 2 x A3 races.  So with a drop to A4 on Monday he looked to have a great chance to get off the mark.  Pups being pups though you just never know and after not pinging the lids and then being crowded at the first , things didn't look like being straight forward.  Laying handy approaching the third bend Olympic showed bravery and guts for such a young pup as he scythed between the two front runners like a knife through butter before running away to a 5 length victory.  It was an impressive performance from one so young and inexperienced.  Our second winner on the night was Salacres David.  We'd hoped David would have been given the call to represent Notts at Perry Barr in the BAGS Track Championship Final however he was overlooked in favour of Beckjay Scooby.  Now Beckjay Scooby is a very decent dog , more than decent in fact , but i'd suggest that on a day when point scoring is all important , David might have been a better choice.  That's just opinion of course and yes a biased one at that , however after beating the aforementioned Scooby whilst not coming out of third gear last night , maybe he'd have been a wise choice afterall.

It's been a year since Awayday Rock last won a race for us , he was off for a good chunk of that time with injury.  The team have worked hard though to get him back to the track in good shape and though todays A5 race was a bit below his previous A2 form , it was so rewarding and so pleasing to see him run so well.  We said thank you for the last time today to two of our good servants , Salacres Jimmy and Roman Blueboy ran their final races for us today and will be heading off to start new lives on a comfy sofa.  I was fully expecting the usual gas bags to start blowing out hot air this week.  To some that's just their nature and I guess whilst they're talking about me at least they're leaving somebody who could take their madcap ramblings to heart alone.  I suppose in a few months time we'll be reading about Jimmy and Blueboy on some list or other , i'll sleep peacefully in the knowledge that whilst they have served me well on the track , they have also been served well themselves , fed nothing but the best of food , looked after like kings and will now start new lives with their new families.  I wish them the very best of luck.

Hope to chat with some of you at the track soon.
